In the final round of the 2023 Women's World Cup, England had been waiting for Spain, who had made sure of qualifying the day before after beating Sweden. The final will be held on Sunday 19 August 2023.
This is the first time England has qualified for the final of the Women's World Cup. With the final between England and Spain, a new champion will be created. Just like England, Spain has also never penetrated the final.
Playing at the Australian Stadium, England started the match very well. They were able to take the lead in the 36th minute through a charming goal from MU's player Ella Toone. This is the first time Australia has trailed during the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Australia had to wait until the 63rd minute to equalize the score through the action of Sam Kerr, who plays in England with Chelsea.
Actions of former MU players in the final minutes
Less than 10 minutes later England could be back ahead. An error from the Australian defender gave England a 2-1 lead. Laurent Hemp made good use of goalkeeper Mackenzi Arnold's communication error with defender Ellie Carpenter.
Hemp is back to being a nightmare for Australia. Hemp's hard work was ended by a drag bait making it easier for former MU player Alessia Russo to score England's third goal in the 86th minute. This goal also ended Australia's resistance.
The semifinal match between Australia and England drew the attention of 77,000 spectators.
