MasterWeb – The red card received by the main goalkeeper of Newcastle United, Nick Pope , in the Premier League match against Liverpool, opened the way for the third goalkeeper of The Magpies, Loris Karius, to debut .

Loris Karius has the opportunity to become the goalkeeper who will guard Newcastle's goal in the Carabao Cup final , aka the English League Cup, against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (26/2/2023).

Previously, Karius joined Newcastle at the start of this season after being released by Liverpool for free.

Karius last played for Union Berlin on loan from the Reds. He only played 5 times with Die Eisernen and conceded 4 goals in all competitions.

The German goalkeeper became famous after making two fatal blunders in the 2017-2018 Champions League final, when Real Madrid won 3-1 over Liverpool.

Karius' reckless shot sparked Karim Benzema's goal (51'). His loose catch then gave a goal for Gareth Bale (83'), so Liverpool's champions' hopes at that time were extinguished.

Almost five years since the tragedy, is Karius ready to make the match against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final a turning point in his career?

Manager from Newcastle United, Eddie Howe, said that Karius was ready to play in the final match at Wembley, London.

"We will make a choice. Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius have trained very well this season,” Howe said after the match against Liverpool which ended in a 0-2 defeat.

"They played matches in friendlies and in training. I say they are ready to play,” said Howe, emphasizing the readiness of his goalkeepers ahead of the final.

Actually, Newcastle has a second goalkeeper, namely Martin Dubravka. However, Dubravka previously played for Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

The regulations of the competition itself prohibit a player from representing two different teams in one season, so Dubravka will certainly be absent from defending The Magpies.

"Next week the team needs to get into the mindset that our goal has to be protected, as it has been all season, regardless of who the goalkeeper is," Howe said.

"Whoever the goalkeeper will not change our focus on the defensive aspect of the final," Howe said.
